Deciding On Tools Needed For Roofing

Putting a new roof on all by yourself may seem impossible.  However, all you really need to do is start by deciding on the tools needed for roofing your own home.  It is very likely that you have many handyman skills that you’re not even aware of.  The entire job may prove to be much less difficult than you might imagine.  By proper planning, you can determine how much roofing material you will need and then be able to install it yourself (and maybe with a just little help from your friends!)

When you put a new roof on your home, you want the end result to not only be pleasing to the eye but durable as well.  In order to assure that the roof you build meets your expectations, you’ll need to do some preliminary work.

First of all, you’ll need to decide on a specific roof design.  There are many roof coverings to choose from.  Before you decide, look at the pitch of your roof and determine which roof covering will work best for you.  Go to a reputable roofing dealer and get some advice on what materials are best suited for the type of roof you have.

Once you have purchased your roofing material, you’ll need to cover your roof with the top plate.  This plate rounds off your wall studs and gives you something to nail your roofing material into.  Look at the beam along your roof’s frame and then set the beam.  The set is determined by the pitch you want your new roof to have.

Next, set your rafters 16 inches on center.  This is important because if your roof is steeply pitched, you’ll need less roofing material.  On the other hand, if your roof is low pitched then you’ll need more.  Once you’ve done this, it’s time to install the roof sheathing with roofing nails.  If you are installing an asphalt roof, then you’ll also want to nail down tarpaper.

Finally, you are ready to put down the shingles.  To do this, you’ll need a hammer, roofing nails, adhesive and perhaps a pry bar.  Remember this, however:  keep all of the tools needed for roofing right at your fingertips to make the job go much faster.
