Selecting Roof Tear Off Tools

If you want to make the job of removing your old roof easier, then you need to make sure that you have the right roof tear off tools.  This is absolutely essential if you want the job to be easier and less stressful.  Tearing off an old roof can be a horrible job but with the right equipment at your fingertips you will be able to get it done safely.  Before even starting, take some time to research what you will need and then make sure that everything is in place before you go up on the rooftop!

One of the most important pieces of equipment you will need is a shingle scraper.  This is a shovel-shaped tool that has teeth.  Underneath the shovel is a heel that assists in lifting the old shingles off the roof.  All you have to do is push the scraper under the shingle and lift it off.  It also can be used to remove old nails on the roof.  You can use a regular shovel or some type of pitchfork to pry off the shingles but these tools won’t be nearly as efficient.  You might want to have a pitchfork handy, though, to carry your clumps of old shingles to the edge of the roof for disposal.

The process of using your shingle scraper is really quite easy.  It is important to get the scraper not only under the shingle but also under the tar paper below it.  Then, everything is pulled up in one clean sweep.  Another important thing to remember is that it is easier to work across the top of the roof, pulling up a few shingles at a time.

Once the wood on the roof is exposed, there are likely to be several exposed nails.  These nails can be removed by the shingle scraper also but a better method is to use a pry bar and a hammer.  Or, you can simply hammer the nails back into the wood but this isn’t the best thing to do.  Having a clean, smooth surface for your new roof is much more desirable.  Now that your old shingles are removed, it’s time to discard your roof tear off tools and get ready to install that new roof!
